The appetizer sits there staring her in the face, like the barrel of a gun. Her appetite is
all but gone this evening as she toys with her few cheese sticks which she normally would
have munched down already. Nervously she glances up to look at the clock. Eight
fifty-five. It had taken 25 minutes to get their appetizer. She wondered how long it
would take to actually get their meal over and done with. Of course, with the news she
was planning to bring to Paul tonight, she wasn?t sure if there would be much of a meal to
consume.
?I like this place, do you remember our first date here?? Paul states almost excitedly as
his eyes dart around like those of an attentive bird.
?Of course I do, as if I could forget.? Jane half smiled back, staring at Paul. How could
she forget? Every 6 months for the past 3 years they had been coming in here, and eveyr
time he would ask the same question. Wondering how it was that she had fallen so hard
for him in the beginning, but has since then become so displeased with him, she stares
elsewhere for the time being. He wasn?t too bad looking, or to mean. He?d never been
outright mean to her, maybe a little assish here and there, but that?s to be expected.
Nibbling on one of her cheese sticks she imagines the past times she has tried to break it
off with him, and the way Paul never seemed to ?get it?, to understand what she was
trying to do. Tonight she would make him understand, and he would be forced to accept
it.
?Paul, I have something I need to tell you...?, she says while swallowing the small niblet
of cheese stick she had been chewing for what seemed to be forever.
?What?s that?? says Paul, his small smile growing into a full on grin as if something
good was going to happen.
?I?ve been doing a lot of thinking lately...?
?And??
?Well, we?ve always told each other to be honest right? Honesty was supposed to come
first remember??
?Yes, you can tell me whatever you want, you know I?m here for you...?
?I know I can tell you anything, I know your there for me, but that?s what I wanted to
talk to you about, being there for me.?
?Do you feel as if I?m not around enough? is that the problem??
?No, I just feel like... like we should re-evalutate things between us... you know for us
both?
?Re-evaluate?... Perhaps you?d better keep talking and explain a bit more.?
Pauls expression on his face said it all. The large grin quickly faded to almost a straight
line. His face seemed etched of stone almost, as if emotion was gone from his body. His
eyes registered the hurt already. He knew what she was talking about, but she did owe
him the explanation.
?I?m just not happy anymore, with what we have become, and where we?re at...?
Her voice was rather meek when she said it, hoping that he would assume what was
coming so she wouldn?t have to spell it out anymore than needed. She wasn?t sure if she
could do such a thing. Not sure her voice would hold up the front that she had taught her
body to hold.
?So is this the ?nice? way of telling me you want to... well... to go our seperate ways.. to
split up?? The pain his eyes had told, was slowly becoming aparent in the shakiness of
his voice.
?Well, I suppose... yes, Paul that?s what I mean. I?m sorry I didn?t tell you sooner, but
I?ve just been so unhappy this past year...?
?A YEAR!?? Paul barked out rather loudly, turning a few heads.
?Well I was gonna... I had hoped it was just a phase...?
?A year... man, I sure know how to pay attention..? Pauls face was contorting much like
the rest of him as he squirmed in his chair, trying hard to retain his stone expressionalism
she so hated.
?I?m sorry...? Jane states as her eyes dart to the ground.
And before she can even look up, Paul is gone. Leaving behind more than enough
money to cover the cost of her dinner, and fare for the ride home. She knew he wouldn?t
be at the apartment tonight. It would be a rough night, and she?d have to move soon. But
right now she must keep her composure until she can get home. It was going to be a long
night.

Thanks for doing it. I like the image of him just up and leaving. Still working on mine.
